Robert V. Clickner, L.Ac.

Robert Clickner is a licensed acupuncturist with NCCAOM board certification. In 1999, he graduated from the International Institute for Chinese Medicine (based then in Albuquerque, New Mexico) with a Masters Degree in Oriental Medicine and certification in Tua Na, Oriental Bodywork. After he finished his Masters Degree, Bob wanted to flesh out his training by studying as an apprentice under Vince Black, L.Ac., a reknown marital arts instructor and practioner of Chinese Medicine, located in Tucson, Arizona.

Mr. Black taught Bob how to use osteopathic manual techniques, actually developed in America during the early 20th century, in concert with Chinese Medicine. The East/West combined approach, using bodywork, acupuncture, herbs and supplements which Bob started to develop during this dynamic apprenticeship is what sets his practice apart from many others.

Mr. Black's "boot camp" apprenticeship prepared Bob for the challenging cases he would encounter back east at Acupuncture Associates of Annapolis, the internal medicine practice of Margaret M. Mullins, MD, where he was hired in 2000. Now retired, Dr. Mullins is known as a pioneer in bringing Chinese medicine into the world of Western medicine. She was always willing to look "outside the box" and combine the two approaches when appropriate. Dr. Mullins put great trust in Bob as she referred various complex cases involving chronic pain. Bob's confidence grew with his success in treating these difficult cases, and he was especially grateful for the supportive presence and advice of the medical doctors he worked closely with.

In fall of 2002, Bob moved with his wife and then-toddler son, Ian, to Charlottesville to open his own practice. For the first several years he practiced upstairs from Dr. Greg Gelburd in a charming, converted warehouse known as the Glass Building in downtown Charlottesville, but in March 2009 he moved to his current office in Sachem Village, across from Albemarle High School. The new office offers handicapped parking and no stairs, providing easier access for patients.

Besides treating patients in clinic, Bob teaches occasional workshops and classes: He has lectured and given demonstrations to medical students at the University of Virginia and was a lecturer in anatomy and physiology at the Virginia School of Massage. On an intermittent basis, he teaches Chinese medicine workshops at Aldridge Karate Institute. Bob teaches occasionally at Sacred Plant Traditions, an herbal medicine clinic and school, where he shares oriental medical diagnosis and strategies for building customized herbal formulas for patients. Bob enjoys speaking to groups about alternative and complementary health care: he has given talks at Whole Foods, Integral Yoga, ACAC Downtown, and UVA's Cancer Support Group. He has been a volunteer at the Charlottesville Marathon, giving short treatments to runners after the event.

In his free time, Bob is entertained by his wife, Joan, and children, Ian (age 8) and Georgia (age 3) and an ever-increasing population of dogs.
