Robert V. Clickner, Licensed Acupuncturist

Robert Clickner is a licensed acupuncturist with NCCAOM board certification. He graduated in 1999 from the International Institute for Chinese Medicine (then based in Albuquerque, New Mexico) with a Masters Degree in Oriental Medicine and certification in Tua Na, Oriental Bodywork. After finishing his Masters Degree, Bob wanted to flesh out his training as an apprentice under Vince Black, Lic.Ac., a reknown marital arts instructor and practioner of Chinese Medicine, located in Tucson, Arizona.

Mr. Black taught Bob how to use osteopathic manual techniques, actually developed in America during the early 20th century, in concert with Chinese Medicine. The East/West combined approach Bob started developing during this dynamic apprenticeship is what sets his practice apart from many others.

Mr. Black's "boot camp" apprenticeship prepared Bob for the challenging cases he would encounter back east at Acupuncture Associates of Annapolis, the internal medicine practice of Margaret M. Mullins, MD, where he was hired in 2000. Now retired, Dr. Mullins is known as a pioneer in bringing Chinese medicine into the world of Western medicine. She was always willing to look "outside the box" and combine the two approaches when appropriate. Dr. Mullins put great trust in Bob, referring various complex cases involving chronic pain. Bob's confidence grew with his success in treating these difficult cases, and he was especially grateful for the supportive presence and advice of the medical doctors he worked with.

In fall of 2002, Bob moved with his wife and then-toddler son, Ian, to Charlottesville to open his own practice. For the first several years he practiced upstairs from Dr. Greg Gelburd in a charming, converted warehouse known as the Glass Building in downtown Charlottesville, but in March 2009 he moved to his current office in Sachem Village, across from Albemarle High School. The new office offers handicapped parking and no stairs, providing easier access for patients.

Besides treating patients in clinic, Bob periodically lectures and gives demonstrations to medical students at the University of Virginia. On a regular basis, Bob lectures and serves as clinic supervisor at Sacred Plant Traditions, an herbal medicine clinic and school in Charlottesville. He was a lecturer in anatomy and physiology at the Virginia School of Massage. Bob enjoys speaking to groups about new ways to think about your own health care: he has given talks at Whole Foods, Integral Yoga, ACAC Downtown, and UVA's Cancer Support Group. He has been a volunteer at the Charlottesville Marathon, giving short treatments to runners after the event.

In his spare time, Bob enjoys relaxing with his lively family including wife, Joan, children, Ian (11) and Georgia (5), and dogs Cutty and Iris.
