Blue Ridge Oriental Medicine

Robert V. Clickner

Mr. Black's "boot camp" apprenticeship prepared Bob for the challenging cases he would encounter back east at Acupuncture Associates of Annapolis, the internal medicine practice of Margaret M. Mullins, MD, where he was hired in 2000. Now retired, Dr. Mullins is known as a pioneer in bringing Chinese medicine into the world of Western medicine. She was always willing to look "outside the box" and combine the two approaches when appropriate. Dr. Mullins put great trust in Bob as she referred various complex cases involving chronic pain. Bob's confidence grew with his success in treating these difficult cases, and he was especially grateful for the supportive presence and advice of the medical doctors he worked closely with.

In 2002, Bob began to plan his own clinic, to be based in Charlottesville, Virginia. Making a few inquiries, Bob discovered an ardent supporter in Greg Gelburd, DO, a family medicine physician in downtown Charlottesville. Dr. Gelburd immediately directed Bob to an office space above his own clinic, where a number of complementary and alternative medicine practitioners were setting up practices. This suite of offices, known as Downtown Integrative Medicine, struck Bob with its distinctive, modern style. He was lucky enough to secure a stunning corner office with floor to ceiling windows in this recently rennovated warehouse. In November 2002, Bob moved to Charlottesville with his wife and 15 month old son to start this adventure as a sole practitioner in his own clinic. Blue Ridge Oriental Medicine opened its doors at the end of 2002 and has grown steadily through physician referrals and patient word of mouth.

In December 2007, Bob opened a second office in Harrisonburg, Virginia. This office is located at 1820 Country Club Road -- he shares office space with John Glick, MD, who has been practicing medicine in the Harrisonburg area for decades. Dr. Glick also travels overseas frequently through his work with the Gesundheit Institute. Bob sees patients two days a week in his Charlottesville office and two days a week in the Harrisonburg office. One day a week is devoted to home visits for patients with very limited mobility.

Besides treating patients in clinic, Bob teaches occasional workshops and classes: He has lectured and given demonstrations to medical students at the University of Virginia, was a lecturer in anatomy and physiology at the Virginia School of Massage, and taught a workshop series at Aldridge Karate Institute. On an intermittent basis, Bob teaches at Sacred Plant Traditions, an herbal medicine clinic and school, where he shares oriental medical diagnosis and strategies for building customized herbal formulas for patients. On occasion, he offers a cooking class where he shares healthy, traditional methods of food preparation. Bob enjoys speaking to groups about alternative and complementary health care: he has given talks at Whole Foods, Integral Yoga, ACAC Downtown, and UVA's Cancer Support Group. He has been a volunteer at the Charlottesville Marathon, giving short treatments to runners after the event.

In his free time, Bob is entertained by his wife, Joan, and children, Ian (age 7) and Georgia (17 months), not to mention various furry members of the household (both permanent and temporary). Bob has also recently started running again, and finds he truly enjoys it!
